First separate edition of the world's most famous baseball ballad. "Casey at the Bat" first appeared anonymously in the San Francisco Daily Examiner on June 3, 1888, where Thayer had been hired as a columnist by William Randolph Hearst. It was made famous by the performances of the comic actor DeWolf Hopper, "that jovial patron of the national game," to whom this edition is dedicated.

Octavo (197 x 137 mm). Vignette illustrations in brown throughout. Original pale green illustrated wrappers lettered in dark green and red (wrappers with a little soiling/rubbing and expert restoration to backstrip). Custom cloth box. Provenance: Beverly Browne, Ft. McHenry, MD (ownership inscription to front wrapper and pencil date March 1961).
