Lot Essay

The instantly recognisable design of this Borjalu rug is defined by the broad border of sharp double-hooked polychrome part-hexagons. The bright palette of the present rug, which incorporates a warm aubergine, is of particular note. A very fine and colourful example of a Borjalu rug of the same design can be seen in E. Herrmann, Seltene Orientteppiche VII, Munich, 1985, p.62. pl.24. A further work, likewise with rich colouring and bold border design is found in Ulrich Schurmann, Caucasian Rugs, Braunschweig, 1961, 1974, pp.76-7, pl.11
