Lot Essay
Like the pair of rugs in lot 187, the present lot is another variant on the eighteenth-century Mughal ‘niche and millefleurs’ design. This time, it has been rendered in the ‘pistachio’ green dye characteristic of this particular weaving centre. The further transmission of this classic design, first from India to Persia and thence across the country, demonstrates the ingenuity of nineteenth century weavers as they adapted ‘classic’ designs for a local aesthetic. Other Fereghani prayer rugs with this design were sold in these Rooms, 15 April 2010, lot 103, and 5 April 2011, lot 99.
