Authorial presentation copy to Clarissa Eden, Countess of Avon, one of 750 copies, this copy unnumbered. In this, his last work of fiction, Waugh revived the character of Basil Seal, previously the main protagonist of Waugh's earlier novels, Black Mischief and Put Out More Flags.
