WILDE, Oscar (1854-1900)
The Ballad of Reading Gaol by C.3.3. London: Leonard Smithers, 1899 [but c.1900-1907].
Pirated edition of Wilde's famous poem, originally published in 1898 anonymously using the name 'C.3.3.', Wilde's identification number at Reading prison. Despite the lack of advertisement and fear of negative associations with his name, word leaked out of the true identity, and the book became a resounding commercial success. The original publisher was Leonard Smithers, who decided to capitalise on this success by publishing unauthorised editions after Wilde's death. Although the date on the title states 1899, this edition was probably published between 1900 and 1907. Mason 584.

Octavo (217 x 140mm). Half-title (title with 60mm repaired tear without loss). Contemporary green three-quarter crushed morocco, top edge gilt (spine and tops of covers unevenly faded). Provenance: Anthony Eden (armorial bookplate)
