Lot Essay

The mercenary Bartolommeo Colleoni of Bergamo left funds in his will for an equestrian monument to himself. The original, in the Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo, Venice, was modelled by Verrocchio in 1483 and finally cast after the artist's death by Alessandro Leopardi in 1496.
