Jean Kemp Hogh was one of Gertler’s pre-eminent models of the 1930s. A schoolfriend of Gertler’s landlady’s daughter, Jean sat for the artist for at least nine works (both paintings and drawings) between 1931 and 1934, most notably for The Mandolinist, 1934 (Tate, London). The present work is likely Gertler’s first painting of her. Gertler refers to her sitting for him in a letter of May 1931.
