Further details
Painted in 1928, The Lake is an early example of an unusual aspect of L.S. Lowry’s oeuvre: his emotional response to his own solitude. This facet of Lowry’s life does not appear in his most characteristic scenes of crowds scurrying between factories and into football stadiums. However, living alone for some thirty years in his life, seclusion was an experience that Lowry was very familiar with. His paintings of empty roads, the desolate northern sea, and, in this case, the brooding expanse of a lake, communicate the artist’s own emotional isolation. The lake’s eerie chromatic coolness, the painting’s refined texture, and the haunting shoreline that rises above the water, work together to create an altogether contemplative atmosphere.
