“When I left London to come and live and work in Paris, I hadn’t the least idea of what I was going to paint… I realized as a result that in the paintings and drawings I’ve done here there is much more of Paris than there is of London in all I’ve been able to do in London. The reason is simple: it is easier for me to get the necessary detachment in Paris because I don’t understand much of the French character or the language.
