This work comes from the collection of Maurice Payne, the printer Hockey collaborated with to create the print. One of his early achievements was working for the famed English studio Petersburg Press in the 1960s. In addition to Hockney, Payne created long lasting relationships working with artists, such as Jasper Johns and Jim Dine. His innovative techniques in the printmaking medium, specifically in carborundum collograph and intaglio techniques, pushed many artists to experiment and broaden their work in print.

'The perspective is terrific. It’s a very personal view. You couldn’t take a photograph like this. I’ve always loved this painting. Whenever my father came to London, he always wanted to see Van Gogh’s Chair. He thought it was marvelous' —David Hockney on Van Gogh’s Chair
