MENDELSSOHN BARTHOLDY, Felix (1809-1847)
Autograph letter signed ('Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy') to his friend Erich Heinrich Wilhelm Verkenius ('Herr Präsident'), Dusseldorf, 25 August 1834.
In German. One page, 227 x 210mm, annotated 'No.5' in blue pencil at upper left corner.

On the motets of Orlande de Lassus, and the 'elegance' and 'musical sensibility' of the Dutch pianist and composer Gertrude van den Bergh. 'With many thanks I return you the interesting motets of Lassus, which you kindly sent me via Miss van den Bergh' . He goes on to thank Verkenius for introducing him to van den Bergh, 'this remarkable artist', praising her 'skill and sureness and elegance', and her 'musical sensibility'. Mendelssohn is about to set off for Berlin, from where he will bring a Bach Concerto [for harpsichord, BWV 1052] when he comes to stay with Verkenius.

Gertrude van den Bergh (1793-1840) performed in public from a young age, and studied composition with Johann Burgmüller and piano with Ferdinand Ries. Although she rarely played in public after 1813 she remained well known in musical circles, and became the first female honorary member of the Dutch society for the Promotion of Music in 1830. Sämtliche Briefe 993.
