JANACEK, Leoš (1854-1928)
Autograph letter signed ('Leoš Janácek') to an unidentified recipient ('Highly honoured Sir'), Brno, 30 April 1924.
One page, 230 x 146mm, bifolium. Provenance: with David Schulson Autographs, 2010.

To a correspondent who has confused him with Smetana. 'I did not write the opera The Kiss. It is by B. Smetana. I am afraid I do not know the address for Mascagni. Paderewski is on his way from America to Switzerland, where he is to buy a villa'.

Smetana's The Kiss was first performed at the Provisional Theatre in Prague on 7 November 1876. The Janácek opera with which it could most easily have been confused is perhaps Jenufa (premiered in 1904), with which it shares a village setting. As a young man, Janácek was somewhat ambivalent about the music of Smetana, often considered as the father of Czech music: his attitude softened in later life, however.
