A handsome dos-à-dos binding with English provenance over several centuries. Adams P-1487; BLSTC Italian p.524.

Two works in one volume, 24mo in 12s (111 x 56mm). Printer’s device on titles (tiny hole in Plautus Ii1). Mid-17th century tan morocco, sides handsomely gilt tooled with leafy spray and stylized floral tools, initials ‘MK’ at centre, spine similarly gilt, ‘37’ written fore-edge, binding fragments from a c.1300 French/English manuscript of Aristotle, De longitudine et brevitate vitae (very light wear at extremities); modern quarter morocco folding case. Provenance: ‘MK’ (binding) – a few contemporary annotations giving Act/scene or line numbers – ‘A.J.P. at end of each volume – Frauncis Brode (16th-century inscription) – deleted inscription dated 1663 – ?Otell Newell (gift inscription from his father) – S. Langham, University College, London (19th-century flyleaf inscription) – C. Webb (title inscription) – Alfred B. Maclay (d. 1944; bookplate) – Saul Cohn (sale Parke-Bernet Galleries, 26 April 1955, lot 66) – Cornelius J. Hauck (sale Christie’s NY, 27-28 June 2006, lot 193).
