Details
WISDEN, John (1826-1884)
Cricketers' Almanack for 1870. London: John Wisden, 1870.
Seventh edition, bound in original wrappers. While now under the sole editorship of W.H. Knight, the almanack is for the first time officially named 'John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack' after its founder. The decorative border on the title-page has been adopted from the front wrapper. The title itself is greatly simplified and de-cluttered, 'the year' and even the name of Queen Victoria are dropped from the wording. In terms of content, this edition takes a huge forward step by supplying match reports together with the scores themselves. The almanack that gives the publication its name remains at the start of the book, but with its size reduced to a mere 4 pages.

Octavo (157 x 102mm). 152pp. (Faint scattered spotting on title and preliminaries, otherwise very clean and fresh.) Original printed buff wrappers (rebacked, tiny insignficant marginal stain to front wrapper). Provenance: faint pencil annotation on front cover with a date of 'July 7/[18]72'.
