Lot Essay

It is unusual to find tea bowls and covers in jade as they are more usually seen in porcelain. The poem, composed by the Qianlong Emperor, is a eulogy on tea, known by its title Sanqing Cha or 'Tea of Three Purities'. An imperial inscribed jade tea bowl and cover dated to 1769 was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29 November 2005, lot 1648; another pale celadon tea bowl and cover was sold at Bonhams London, 5 November 2020, lot 138; a third white jade tea bowl and cover was sold at Christie's Hong Kong on 26 November 2014, lot 2931.
