Impressively cast, this arrangement of three faces was almost certainly the bottom-most tier of a stack of eleven heads in a monumental figure of Avalokiteshvara. The eleven-headed form of Avalokiteshvara was worshipped throughout the Himalayas and China from as early as the Tang dynasty, and is one of the most visually impressive forms of the bodhisattva.
