Georges Jouve is one of the definitive ceramicists of the 1950s, heralding from France. He studied at the prestigious École Boulle where he acquired the nickname 'Apollon', or 'Apollo'. After studies, Jouve moved to the south of France where he endeavored to use local soil for the making of clay, and born from this experimentation was his freedom of expression and creativity for shape and form made from Earth. Not only did Jouve understand the chemistry of clay and kiln work, but also experimented with glazes of all colors and a diversity of viscosities.

This vase bears Jouve's less common signature, Apollon, possibly indicating an early work by the ceramicist.
