Lot Essay

Born in Philadelphia in 1808, John F. Francis’ portraiture was widely celebrated by his contemporaries, though he is presently renowned for the still lifes that he created in his later career. Within the still-life genre, Francis specialized in tabletop settings that included balanced arrangements of elegant ceramics and glassware alongside bountiful feasts. His work is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C. as well as the Art Institute of Chicago.
