With the band decorated with swans, hens and panthers, all accentuated by the ample use of added color and incision, this cup belongs to the first phase of the Elbow Out Painter's career. For a discussion of the three distinct phases of his work, see pp. 101-104 in P. Heesen and M. Iozzo, Athenian Black-Figure Cups from the Campana Collection in the National Archaeological Museum of Florence.
