Lot Essay

The hammered gold sheets are adorned with repoussé decoration including sphinxes, palmettes and hatched borders. The rivet holes on some sheets indicate that the gold was secured to a solid core, likely constructed of wood, here reconstructed. For a similar example, see no. 116 in E.D. Reeder, Scythian Gold.
