DONATO CRETI, FAUN PLAYING A FLUTE TO A NYMPH, PEN AND BROWN INK
This quickly rendered drawing has been described by Renato Roli as ‘one of the most greatest achievements of the master’s graphic art’ (Roli, op. cit., p. 26). The sheet can be securely dated to 1693, thanks to the inscription added by Creti’s friend and patron, the Bolognese collector Count Alessandro Fava. The immediacy of execution reveals the influence of Venetian art on Creti’s works of the time. The sheet can be compared with a drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago, in the same technique and style, representing Rinaldo and Armida (inv. 1960.836; see Joachim and McCullagh, op. cit., no. 96, ill.).
