FRANÇOIS BOUCHER, HEAD OF A WOMAN, BLACK CHALK, TRACES OF WATERMARK

According to Alastair Laing, this delicate head study in black chalk dates from the 1750s or 1760s and was used to prepare one of the numerous figures in Boucher’s landscapes and other pastoral scenes, such as a shepherdess or a peasant woman. In the painting The bird call, dated around 1765 and kept at the Musée du Louvre, the head in profile of the young woman seated in the foreground is very similar to the present drawing (inv. 2727; see A. Ananoff, François Boucher, Lausanne and Paris, 1976, II, no. 607, ill.).

Cette délicate étude de tête à la pierre noire date, selon Alastair Laing, des années 1750-1760 et a très certainement servi à préparer une des nombreuses figures qui peuplent ses paysages et autres scènes pastorales telle une bergère ou une paysanne. Dans le tableau L’Appeau, dit L’Oiseau pris dans les filets, daté vers 1765 et conservé au musée du Louvre, la tête de profil de la jeune femme assise au premier plan, se rapproche fortement du présent dessin (inv. 2727 ; A. Ananoff, François Boucher, Lausanne-Paris, 1976, II., n° 607, ill).
