Lot Essay

Following the wedding of Rama and Sita, Parusharama, the sixth avatar or Vishnu, appears before king Dasaratha, Rama, Lakshamana and their brothers. Works from this series, likely completed during the reign of Maharana Amar Singh II (1672-1710), are in distinguished private and public collections including eleven folios in the Ducrot Collection (V. Ducrot, Four Centuries of Rajput Painting, Torino, 2009, pp.43-8, nos. ME 18-ME 28), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (acc. no. M86.345.3), ten folios at the Norton Simon Museum (acc. nos. P.2008.2.1-P.2008.2.10), the Cleveland Museum of Art (2018.142), the Walter's Art Museum (acc. no. W.888) and the Ackland Art Museum (acc. no. 87.55). Other folios from this series sold at Christie's New York, 18 March 2014, lot 1099, Bonhams New York 19 March 2019, lot 849, and at Sotheby's New York, 22 September 2022, lot 361.
