Lot Essay

The Talbot hound originally imported from France, was given its name by the Shrewsbury premier Earls of England, whose family name is Talbot and who used the Talbot hounds as supporters for their coat-of-arms. The animals became popular in England as war dogs - went into battle in full suits of armour. They are normally associated with bear baiting and hunting. They were well known as man hunters, and were famous for their pursuit of Robert the Bruce across the Borderland of Scotland.
The lozenge or diamond represents the square which has several interpretations, including the four virtues, the four seasons and the four letters of the word Adam. It can also represent heavan, earth, space and time.
