An oak settle
of small size, the triple panel back with guilloche uprights, deep lunette-carved frieze, scrolling ears and pointed finials, the downswept arms with up-curved terminals and turned supports, the solid seat with roundel-decorated rails and turned legs joined by square section stretchers, Shropshire, mid 17th century -- 39½in. (100cm.) wide

The attribution to Shropshire is based upon distinctive turned and carved decoration, typical of a small group of examples. An armchair with a similar profile and the same roundel-carved seat rails is illustrated in Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979, p.253, fig. 352a, 353b
