A cedarwood, plum and oak chest
in two sections, with moulded top and rusticated frieze, above four long drawers, all geometrically moulded and between similarly moulded panel uprights, the top drawer flanked by secret compartments, the sides each with rusticated frieze and raised panels, on stile feet, English, late 17th century -- 41½in. (106cm.) wide

The ingenious secret compartments within this chest are hidden to either side of the top drawer and are accessed through the upper side panels. These are released by removing a smaller flanking panel which itself is only released by a secret locking mechanism concealed by the upper drawer. See illustration for detail
