Mildred Archer (1911-2005) is perhaps best known for her extensive work on 19th and 20th century painting in British India and the term “Company” paintings is credited to her. She was curator of the East India Company collection of paintings in the India Office Library. William Archer (1907-79) was a former British civil servant in India before becoming a leading figure in the field of Indian painting and was later appointed Keeper of the Indian Section at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
