THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN The following seven lots of Egyptian style painted wooden figures were acquired in Egypt by Lt. Colonel George John Gregory, who died aged 82 in the 1930's. He travelled to Egypt in 1882, with Sir Garnet Wolsey's Expeditionary Force, becoming head of Customs and Excise with the rank of Bimbashi (Major) for 21 years and Governor of Koseir. In 1917 he was awarded the Order of the Nile in recognition of his services to Egypt by Sultan Fuad of Egypt. The wooden figures have passed by descent to the present owner, the grandson of Lt. Colonel Gregory. They are of particular interest as many are made of wood taken from the base boards of ancient Egyptian coffins, and all are over 60 years old.
