FRANÇOIS BOUCHER, A SHEPHERD AND SHEPHERDESS, OIL ON CANVAS

Likely dating from the 1730s, this painting was executed quite early on in the career of François Boucher (1703-1770). After returning from Rome in 1731, the artist became a highly sought-after painter in Paris, especially for his pastoral scenes. This taste for an idealised version of bucolic life was to permeate the entire century, and Boucher's numerous shepherdesses in aristocratic dress were to adorn the walls of palaces throughout Europe. Another version of the present painting, now in St. Petersburg (Hermitage Museum, inv. no. ГЭ-1275), was originally in the collection of Catherine the Great (1729-1796).

Située dans les années 1730, cette peinture se comprend comme une œuvre réalisée assez tôt dans la carrière de François Boucher (1703-1770). Rentré de Rome en 1731, l’artiste devient à Paris un peintre extrêmement populaire pour ses scènes pastorales. Un certain goût pour une vision fantasmée de la vie bucolique va traverser tout le siècle et les nombreuses bergères de Boucher aux mises aristocratiques orneront les décors des palais de l’Europe entière. Une autre version de notre scène bucolique se trouve d’ailleurs à Saint-Pétersbourg (musée de l’Ermitage, no. inv. ГЭ-1275), provenant directement de la collection de Catherine II de Russie (1729-1796).
