ANGELICA KAUFFMANN, RA, ALLEGORY OF MERCY AND TRUTH, OIL ON ZINC

Truth, a book in hand and wearing a robe decorated with the sun, raises her gaze to the sky and embraces Mercy with her left arm. The latter, holding an olive branch in her hand, looks down modestly at the fruit at her feet. The subject of this allegorical composition is taken from the Book of Psalms: "Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other" (Ps 85, 10).

La Vérité, qui porte le soleil sur sa robe et un livre dans la main, lève son regard vers le ciel et enlace la Miséricorde avec son bras gauche. Celle-ci, tenant dans sa main une branche d'olivier, pose son regard pudiquement sur les fruits à ses pieds. Cette composition allégorique est tirée du Livre des Psaumes : "La bonté et la vérité se sont rencontrées ; la justice et la paix se sont entre-baisées" (Ps 85, 10).
