Nathaniel Hawthorne, ca. 1862
HAWTHORNE, Nathaniel (1804-1864). Photograph signed ("Nathl Hawthorne"), Washington: Mathew Brady, [1862].

Mounted albumen, carte-de-visite, 98 x 56mm (closely trimmed affecting credit line).

A rare signed photograph by Mathew Brady. A fine example of the most famous portrait of the author, from his second-known sitting with the noted photographer which occurred during his visit to Washington in March 1862. The portrait, one of several taken by Alexander Gardner in Brady's studio, is described by one of Hawthorne's biographers as the most "special" of the series: "his lower body slowly washes into whiteness; here he seems approachable, palpable, evanescent, and mortal, all at the same time" (Wineapple, 348). RBH lists only three other signed photographs of Hawthorne offered for sale in the past fifty years and this is the first to come to auction in nearly a decade. Provenance: Christie's, New York, 29 May 1998, lot 66 (part).
