Lot Essay

The Campana brothers explore the relationship between humor, comfort, and extravagance in their stuffed animal series. Using familiar objects, the 'Panda' Chair immediately feels both welcoming and perplexing, signature qualities in the Campana brothers oeuvre of works inspired both by their home of São Paulo and a perpetual need to transform everyday objects into works of art. In addition to panda bears, the Campana brothers designed similar chairs using teddy bears, alligators, and cartoon characters, each equally cheerful yet slightly eerie.
