Considered by many as the original diver’s tool watch, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms was the first watch to feature a turning bezel and automatic movement. Launched in 1953 in collaboration with the elite French combat divers “Nageurs de Combat,” the military unit needed a reliable, durable, legible, and water-resistant wristwatch. At the time, Blancpain CEO Jean-Jacques Fiechter had a tremendous passion for diving, and quickly accepted the challenge.

Early Fifty Fathoms dive watches feature radium luminescence, developing a desirable orange patina, such as on the dial of the present lot. The lume contrasts nicely against gloss black dial. Measuring 34mm, the watch wears well thanks to the cushion-shaped case, making the steel timepiece suitable to wear on any occasion.
