Launched in 2007, Patek Philippe reference 5098R-001 was an unexpected wristwatch released under the Gondolo collection. Featuring a streamline tonneau-shaped case, the timepiece draws inspiration from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. On full display, the dial exhibits a masterfully handcrafted guilloche patterning which creates a compelling, yet refined aesthetic. The guilloche creates many facets within the dial, captivating, and reflecting light.
Seldomly utilized by the manufacturer, the spade hands and Breguet numerals further enhance motifs from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. The dial also features a gold chapter ring which provides a charming contrast against the silver guilloche.
On the rear, a sapphire caseback displays Patek Philippe inhouse Caliber 25-21REC. The manual-winding movement is rectangular-shaped to appropriately fit the case. The caseback is slightly concaved, which allows for the unexpectedly large timepiece to meld to the wrist. Reference 5098R-001 is an unusual and exuberant timepiece from the traditional manufacturer and would be a wonderful addition to any serious collection.
