Produced in 18k yellow gold between 2001-2005, reference 5074J-001 is an extraordinary, complicated timepiece from Patek Philippe, and is truly a masterpiece that one needs to experience in person. Like the iconic 5070, the watch is housed in a large 42mm case with an eye-catching stepped bezel. The lugs are also stepped and sculpted, resembling the epochal reference 2499.
The present lot, being crafted from 18k yellow gold, has a classical appearance with a traditional silvered three-register dial configuration for the perpetual calendar which all began with reference 1518. At 9 o’clock, a slider is noticeable revealing the mighty minute repeater. Upon activation, the audible chime is an incredible delight to experience, and beholds a shocking surprise. As the nickname suggests, the repeater features extra-long gongs which provide a low, powerful resonance resembling a cathedral bell tower. Thanks to the large case, the gongs encircle the movement an extra time and a half, and the chime is unlike any other repeater that that one may encounter.
On the rear, reference 5074 has a sapphire caseback displaying in-house caliber R 27 Q. The movement features hand finished Côtes de Genève and anglage decoration, which exemplify the expert craftsmanship of Patek Philippe watchmakers. Additionally, a micro-rotor is utilized to help the watch remain slim and comfortable on the wrist while allowing for automatic winding capabilities. The rotor has barleycorn or grain d’orge finishing, paying homage to Patek’s first automatic wristwatch and first decorated rotor found in reference 2526. The present lot is a wonderful amalgamation of historical references from Patek Philippe, and is a true, complicated, timeless icon.
To the best of our knowledge, this watch is one of twelve known examples to be publicly offered at auction.
