Cast griffin protomes were most often attached to the rims of hammered cauldrons and set on tripods or conical stands. Similar griffin protomes were cast on Samos and dedicated at the sanctuary of Hera on that island. Olympia and Etruria also produced such vessels, and they have been found at Athens, Argos, Ephesus, Rhodes and elsewhere. For similar, see Acc. no. 1972.118.54 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
