Lot Essay

This landscape appears to be a version, with slight differences, of a painting formerly in the collection of Comte Henri Greffulhe (1848-1932), Paris (see C. Hofstede de Groot, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of the Most Eminent Dutch Painters of the Seventeenth Century, London, 1912, IV, pp. 469-70, no. 47; present whereabouts unknown). The relationship between the versions is still unclear, as the Greffulhe painting is known only from black-and-white photographs; it features two sailboats on the river in the distance, but lacks the figures of the two villagers at lower right.
