Lot Essay

The attribution of this drawing to Ercole Procaccini was made by Nicholas Turner (communication written to Flavia Ormond) comparing it to another study for the figure of Christ, formerly in William Esdaile's collection (present whereabouts unknown), where the name of Ercole Procaccini is inscribed on the verso. Although the present drawing does not seem to relate to any specific commission, it is very close in composition to a ceiling fresco depicting The Ascension of Christ with angels holding the symbols of the Passion in the Church of Santa Marta, Porlezza.
