Lot Essay

The sheet is a typical work by the Genoese painter, very prolific. Studies of the artist’s have been carried out in recent years (see, for example, the essays by Margherita Priarone and Maria Clelia Galassi in Domenico Piola e la sua bottega. Approfondimenti sulle arti nel secondo Seicento Genovese, Genoa, 2019). In style and technique, the present drawing can be compared to a sheet in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Venus and Cupid in Vulcan’s forge (inv. 80.3.192; see J. Bean, L. Turčić, 17th Century Italian Drawings in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1979, no. 307, ill.).
