Lot Essay

Like his father, Gerrit de Heer, Willem de Heer produced finely executed works in pen on vellum; rarer are his coloured landscapes. Similar to the present, previously unpublished drawings is a pair in the Abrams collection at the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge (inv. 1.2018.80, 1.2018.81; see W.W. Robinson, Bruegel to Rembrandt. Dutch and Flemish Drawings from the Maida and George Abrams Collection, exhib. cat., London, British Museum, Paris, Institut Néerlandais, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, Fogg Art Museum, 2002-2003, nos. 98a, 98b, ill.).
