Lot Essay

While the present sheet cannot be related to any surviving painting by the artist, three paintings depicting Tobias and the Angel are recorded in one of the sales of Chéron’s estate in 1726 (Francis Russell, ‘Louis Chéron, a sale catalogue’, The Burlington Magazine, CXXX, June 1988, pp. 465-466).
