Better known for his work as an illustrator and engraver, this confrontation of cavalrymen is a rarity among Moreau the Younger’s drawings – and one signed and precisely dated. The swift, vigorous and supple execution is comparable a wash drawing from 1770, Motherly joy (formerly with Galerie Arnoldie Livie, Munich; see Catalogue 32, 2021, no. 8, ill.).
