First edition, rare. Although the bibliographies disagree about the number of plates called for, it would appear that 108 is the correct number as plates 86 and 87 were not issued. these two plates are not present in this copy, nor in the Natural History Museum library copy in South Kensington, and is the same as two other copies recorded in Rare Book Hub. BM (NH) II, p. 839 (calling for 110 plates, noting plates 86 and 87 are wanting); Nissen ZBI 1931 (calling for 116 plates).
2 volumes bound in one [text and plates, plus supplementary text to volume one], quarto (277 x 202mm). 108 hand-coloured lithographic plates [numbered 1-3c, 4-85, 88-92; supplementary plates I-Ib, II-IIIb, IV-IVa, V-Vb, VI-VIII; plates 86 and 87 apparently not issued]. Contemporary half calf, dark green cloth boards, flat spine gilt, red morocco label (extremities very slightly rubbed). Provenance: Janson & Sons (natural history dealer and bookseller, small discreet stamp).
