Celui qui dit les choses sans rien dire. Paris: Maeght, 1976.
Chagall is truly ‘he who says things without saying anything’, as the title of this beautiful livre d’artiste suggests. The etchings in this volume are poetry for the eyes, capturing the surreal emotions of Aragon’s verse in bright tones and hues. Despite the quarrel that it caused between its collaborators, Celui qui dit les choses sans rien dire is a profound juncture of picture and poetry. Cramer books 99.

Folio (475 x 367mm). Number 143 of 220, printed on BFK Rives wove paper, errata leaf at end printed in red and blue, signed by the author and artist, five etchings with aquatint in colours. Loose as issued, in the original paper wrappers and contained in a grey cloth cover box lettered in gilt on spine. Provenance: outer wrapper numbered 143 by publisher.
