A life history of the British butterflies. [Dartford: privately printed,] 1906 [but 1908].
Rare complete suite of Johnson’s hand-drawn work recording the various species of butterflies of Britain. Auction records do not list any copies offered with the full suite of 61 plates. Nissen ZBI lists four works by him, but not this one.
Two volumes, octavo (216 x 134mm). Title printed in red and black, 61 watercolour drawings heightened with gum arabic, mounted on stubs (very light marginal finger-soiling, plates remarkably fresh). Modern brown half morocco gilt and green cloth boards, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, gilt edges. Provenance: Sir William Browne Ffolkes (engraved armorial bookplate) — T. J. Dillon (bookplate).
