Suppressed by the author: an exceptional copy of the first edition in the rare dust-jacket. Commercially unsuccessful, with only 1200 copies sold, the author was so unhappy with his third novel that he never allowed Rumour at Nightfall to be reprinted. In his autobiography, Greene writes: 'My second and third novels, The Name of Action and Rumour at Nightfall, published in 1930 and 1931, can now be found, I am glad to think, only in secondhand bookshops at an exaggerated price, since some years after their publication I suppressed them'. Octavo. (A few leaves with faint insignificant creasing in gutter from production flaw, tiny indent at gutter of top edge). Original dark red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, blind stamped star motif to front cover, publisher’s seal stamped in blind on lower cover (spine ends faintly creased, loose stitching thread at pp.272-3, otherwise a fine copy); original dust-jacket in second state with price sticker of 4/- over original printed price of 3/6, typography on spine altered and reviews of Stamboul Train on rear panel (in near-fine condition with only tiny insignificant nicks to spine ends); housed in a dark green quarter morocco solander box. Provenance: The Holliday Bookshop (New York bookseller’s ticket on rear pastedown).
