Nineteen Eighty-Four
George Orwell
ORWELL, George (1903-1950). Nineteen Eighty-Four. London: Secker & Warburg, 1949.

An icon of 20th-century fiction: first edition in the original red dust-jacket. Two versions of the dust-jacket were issued, one green and one red, with no priority known. Nineteen Eighty-Four, Orwell's last novel, published just a year before his death, was an outstanding success. It 'is written with his particular feeling and clarity and though it flags sometimes with his growing fatigue even the political arguments are never dull. In fact they are worked out with passionate logic. "Double Think", "Newspeak", "Big Brother" now form part of the language. It is a warning against totalitarianism under any disguise – left or right' (Connolly The Modern Movement 99). Fenwick, A.12a.

Octavo. Original light green cloth, titles to spine in red; original red dust-jacket (spine slightly faded, small chips and creases at corners); housed in a green quarter morocco box.
