GERSHWIN, George (1898-1937). Preludes for Piano. New York: New World Music, 1927.

First edition of the piano score, signed and inscribed by George Gershwin: ‘For Mr. Arie Abileah – with sincere admiration, George Gershwin, Apr. 1929.’ Gershwin wrote a number of jazz-inflected Preludes which were debuted in New York in December 1926. Three of the Preludes were subsequently published together in 1927, becoming ‘a cornerstone of the American solo piano repertoire’. The recipient, Arie Abileah, was a prominent Israeli pianist who performed in New York between 1926-1932 before settling in Jerusalem as a professor at the Conservatory of Music. Pollack, 392.
