Lot Essay

Of the several vessels named Pomone which served in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, only two were frigates mounting 28 guns on their main deck. The first was built on the Medway, launched in 1805 and wrecked off the Needles on 14 October 1811 whilst the second was the Franco-Italian L'Astree, renamed Pomone to replace the vessel lost the next year. As both frigates were practically identical in tonnage, dimensions and overall appearance however, even the most painstaking research may fail to identify which of the two ships is that depicted here.
