This delicate amulet represents a meditating chief, fumu, whose eyes remain closed, introspective. He kneels, pleading for mercy, his fingers locked beneath his legs. He wears five bracelets on his left arm and a folded cap on his head. A chain crosses his chest. Elegantly executed, Lumbu amulets, or miswinga, are the gems of this regional statuary. Their iconography displaying seated, kneeling or sitting figures echoes that of the Kongo’s. While each amulet bears unique details and ornaments, the headdress known as ighodu, a central hull and long hair at the back of the head, is archetypal. This hairstyle was once a distinctive mark of Kongo royalty. The deep reddish-brown patina beautifully lights up the piece.
